Elastic potential energy is the energy stored in elastic materials. The amount of potential energy stored is related to the amount of stretch of the device---the more stretch, the more stored energy. Like a rubber band ball, our economies have been artificially stretched by such factors as uncontrolled government spending, population growth, global competition, over regulation, overcapacity, technology changes and massive borrowing.
I have been watching the economic rubber band ball begin to unravel for years, steadfastly warning about the economic downturn in various media. Now as more of the economy has begun to unravel, I’m no longer the lone voice I was in 2003 when I predicted the downward direction of the global economy at the World Future Society Forum .
With over forty years’ experience as a global management consultant, I have a unique, real world, bottom up understanding of what factors make the economy tick and have an excellent record of published predictions. Despite the pronouncements of those who will never stop believing in a rosy scenario, I predict we are in for much deeper economic trouble.
By the last quarter of 2013, the U.S. and the global economy, to continue with our massive ball of rubber bands analogy, will begin to violently unwind, tossing off companies, individuals and governments. What Real Factors Will Impact the Economy?
I’ve learned firsthand that organizations are as individual as people. The factors that affect the success or failure of companies, even within the same industry, can be quite different. Therefore, a one-size-fits-all, top-down approach is of little value.
I have also observed that most of the determinants of organizational success were not the type of data collected and analyzed by economists or others charged with determining economic direction. Economic forecasting must be based on factors that impact organizations and propel economic growth. Therefore, my bottom-up, company-specific approach will always produce more accurate forecasts than top-down macroeconomic tools and theories.
